Undocumented features of the Disklavier

Mark II

Use "REALTIME MIDI-IN MODE" to record incoming MIDI data on the Disklavier. This is one way to convert a MIDI sequence to a Disklavier file, and is more accurate than taking the regular MIDI in and recording the hammers striking the strings. In this mode you will not hear the piano play. You will have to monitor the external MIDI source (i.e. sequencer) to know when the piece is over, to press STOP on the Disklavier.

To enter REALTIME MIDI-IN MODE, power up the piano holding down three buttons: "VOLUME", "TEMPO", and "TRANSPOSE". The display will then say something about "MIDI data recording". Now when you record you won't hear the piano play. Press STOP when the external data is finished. you'll see the LED's in the display indicating the velocity of the incoming notes.

To get out of REALTIME MIDI-IN MODE, turn the piano off.

This mode can also be used to overcome the usual half second time delay. The piano will now respond as fast as it can to incoming data, when not recording. The response time, however, depends on the velocity of the notes. The table below shows how louder notes come out faster than softer notes:

Realtime MIDI-IN Delay Schedule

Each line below represents a triplet:
MIDI VELOCITY, ON (ms), OFF (ms)
01, 212, 64
10, 212, 64
20, 212, 64
28, 152, 64
30, 68, 40
40, 44, 36
7F, 32, 32

Later models

Later models have a similar method of recording external data. Power up while holding down "DISK", "METRONOME", and "FUNC/EDIT" buttons. Press the "RECORD" button, then the "DISK" button. Rotate the knob so that the track number goes all the way around to "MDR MODE REC". Then press the start button and record. Again, you'll see the LED's respond to velocity input, and an indication of the available memory space.

DELAY TIME CONTROL MODE
While in MIDI mode and with "MIDIOUT-DELAY OUT' displayed, you can
enter DELAY TIME CONTROL mode by depressing [START/PAUSE] and
[STOP] for a few seconds.

LCD will display "DELAY TlME-500m"

You can change the DELAY TIME with the [STOP] and [START/PAUSE]
buttons.

[STOP] button - increment by 4msec step
[START/PAUSE] button - decrement by 4msec

The adjustable range Is 0 - 700msec.

TO PLAY two DlSKLAVlER PIANOS SIMULTANEOUSLY - Set "DELAY
TIME = 000msec" on the "master" Disklavier (the one playing the disk).
Connect one end of a MIDI cable, to the MIDI OUT port of the "master"
Disklavier and the other end to the MIDI IN port of the second Disklaver.
