Rudiments

To learn to read music, you must know how to determine which note is to be played at what time.

First learn to read rhythms.

Next, learn the names of the notes and where they go on the treble and bass clefs.

After you have learned how the letter names "A" through "G" apply to the notes, you have to learn the effect of the sharp and flat symbol.

Once you know about shartps and flats you should learn how a major scale is formed, and how a major scale can be built starting on any of the 12 white and black note pitch classes.

After you understand major scales, you can relate them to key signatures.

As we go around the circle of fifths, the sharps and flats are added to the key signatures in a particular order.

You might wish to remember the order of the sharps using one of the following memory aids:

Order of the sharps:

Fat Cats Get Dizzy After Eating Beef

Order of the flats:

The word BEAD followed by

Greatest Common Factor

(Notice that this is the order of sharps backwards)

You must learn what the order of the sharps and flats are, and where to put them on the treble and bass clefs.
