Know the notational system
Key signatures, time signatures, bar lines, repeats, stems, beams, beats, rests, accidentals
Identify harmonic progressions
- diatonically-related chords
- secondary dominants
- modulation
- layout on piano keyboard
- analyze functions (with Roman numerals) of pop song lead sheet
Analyze pop song structure showing type, length, and differences between sections with "schematic diagrams":
- apply labels to sections (i.e. "verse", "chorus", "bridge", etc.)
- show number of bars
- make notes on underneath each section indicating what is different between it and other sections. For example, instrumentation, playing style, modulation, etc.
Identify chords
You should know the correct chord symbols for the triads and seventh chords we have studied.
Exercise: Identify the following chords:
Write down what you think the chord symbols should be and then check your work
- First get the chords into root position, then compare them with major triads or seventh chords.
- See what's been altered and up with the correct chord symbol.
Ear training
Know the sound of
- major, minor, and diminished triads
- major seventh, dominant seventh (7) and minor seventh
