Activity Assignment [ A-3 ]
Fill out this worksheet and turn in during class on the day assigned on the Schedule.
Find a place where where you can see a continuing vibrating source, like a radio playing, an engine running, bells ringing, someone talking, etc. You may want to bring a friend to create it. Listen while the pressure wave travels in a direct path from it to you. Then move around a corner and compare the sound when the pressure wave has to bend around the corner.
- Where were you when you were listening?
- What was the source of the vibrations?
- Make a diagram showing the source of vibrations, the pressure wave spreading out, the structure that could block its direct path, and your position when had gone around the corner to listen.
- Do you think it produced mostly high or mostly low frequencies?
- How far away were you when you could see it?
- How far away were you from the corner when you couldn't see it?
- How did the volume compare between the two listening locations?
- How did the tone compare between the two positions you listened from? Did one sound clearer or more muffled than the other?
- Was the pressure wave being mostly reflected, refracted, or diffracted as it goes around the corner?
