Activity Assignment [ A-4 ]

Watch this video about finding room resonances.

Try creating resonances with one or more musical instruments, containers, rooms, etc.

You might want to try installing a free oscillator app on your phone, like Frequency Sound Generator for Android, Audio Function Generator for iOS, or on the web in a browser..

If you have a tape measure you can measure the dimensions of the space and see if the resonating frequency makes sense in relation to the distance between two primary walls. Remember to double the distance of the space to come up with the appropriate wavelength, as David Larson did in the videos. [ wavelength calculator ]

Upload a Word, pdf, or txt file to Canvas with your answers to the following questions.

  1. What space did you try to create resonation in? It helps if the sides of the space are parallel with each other, and the surfaces don't absorb the pressure wave, like in a shower.
  2. What did you create the vibrations with?
  3. Are standing waves that create resonantion produced by mostly reflection, refraction, or diffusion?
