Activity Assignment [ A-8 ]

Check the due date for [ A-8 ]. You have been given a little more time to complete this assignment since it involves attending a concert in Sursa Auditorium [ check the schedule ], both in the Music Instruction building. Most concerts are free.

Sit in two different seats during the concert, one close to the stage, and the other towards the back. (Auralex room engineer / MMP alumnus, Nile Wright predicted that there will be more bass in the back row and in the corners) Change seats between pieces during the applause so you don't disturb the performers or other people in the audience. The best time to get up to move is just after the applause starts for one piece so that you can be in the other seat before the next piece starts. If you pick seats close to the aisle you won't disturb people as much in the process of moving.

Create a Word file for your work on the following questions:

  1. What concert did you attend? What style(s) of music did they play?
  2. Which piece sounded the best to you? Why?
  3. How many performers were there? What instruments did they play? Where were they positioned?
  4. Where were you sitting at first? How close to the stage were you? How close to the middle of the row were you?
  5. How clear were the sounds of the performers? Did the volume or tone change when you moved seats? If so, in what way? What factors go into changing the volume or tone heard in one seat compared with another?
  6. How much reverberation was there in general? What factors in the construction are responsible for that?
  7. Did the balance between direct sound and reflected sound change when you moved seats? If so, how?
  8. Which seat did it sound better in? In what way?

Save your work as a Word .doc or .docx file or PDF and upload to Canvas.
