Activity Assignment [ A-9 ]

Check the due date for [ A-9 ]. You have been given extra time to complete this assignment since it involves producing something in Audacity.

Create a 1-minute mp3 recording of a project in Audacity simulating three different acoustical spaces. Write a script for one or more people to say enough to let the listener know where they are supposed to be. For example:

{ Music playing from phone on desk} I've been inside my little bedroom all day. I think I'll take a walk.
{ Sound of footsteps } To get outside I have to walk down this long, tiled hallway.
Now that I'm outside I can enjoy the fresh air. I can see cars driving by, and hear birds singing in the distance.

If you get an account at freesound.org you can find lots of royalty-free sound effects.

Create a Word file answering the following questions. Divide your writeup into three sections, one for each of the environments. Provide a screen shot showing what reverb settings you used. Here is an example of how the pop-up might look, you will pick your own parameter settings instead of using these values:

For each of the three sections, answer the following questions:

  1. Which reverb preset did you start with, if any?
  2. What experiments did you make for pre-delay time? How did you decide on what settings to use?
  3. What experiments did you make for reverberance? How did you decide on what setting to use?
  4. How did you decide on what room size to use?
  5. How did you decide on what wet/dry balance to use?
  6. Which of the three environments was the hardest to simulate? Why do you think that was?

Save your written work as a Word .doc or.docx file, or PDF and upload to Canvas. Select all tracks and time and export the project as an .mp3 file. Check that the export worked OK and then and attach the mp3 file in Canvas.
