How to make your neighbors paranoid

Some people have started naming their Wi-fi netowork “FBI SURVEILLANCE VAN”. Seemed amusing to me, although there are some reports that it has pushed at least one person over the edge.

People who log more hours in front of the television are at greater risk of dying, or developing diabetes and heart disease, a new study suggests. “The message is simple,” study author Dr. Frank Hu at the Harvard School of Public Health told Reuters Health. “Cutting back on TV watching is an important way to reduce sedentary behaviors and decrease risk of diabetes and heart disease.”

Proverbial kids

Elementary school students are widely reported to have been assigned to come up with new endings for well known proverbs. Sounds like a fun activity for the young ones of all ages. Here are a few of my favorites:

Don’t bite the hand that …looks dirty.
A penny saved is …not much.
If at first you don’t succeed…get new batteries.
An idle mind…is the best way to relax.
If you lie down with dogs…you’ll stink in the morning.
There are none so blind as …Stevie Wonder.
Better late than…pregnant.
You can’t teach an old dog…math.

The ukelele is a fun, affordable instrument that produces a sweet sound. Ukelele Mike has created a great set of YouTube instructional videos where he demonstrates simple arrangements of tasty pop songs from decades gone by, including many Beatles songs.

Running With Gazelles, Eating With Lions

Posted: October 20th, 2010 | Author: | Filed under: Uncategorized | No Comments »

The World Is Flat 3.0: A Brief History of the Twenty-first Century, by Thomas Friedman. Pulitzer Prize-winning author, a bestselling, well-written look at globalization. In a section about offshoring he reports a posting of an African proverb, translated into Mandarin, on the wall of a pump factory in Beijing:

Every morning in Africa, a gazelle wakes up.
It knows it must run faster than the fastest lion or it will be killed.
Every morning a lion wakes up.
It knows it must outrun the slowest gazelle or it will starve to death.
It doesn’t matter whether you are a lion or a gazelle.
When the sun comes up, you better start running.
