Week 4

Review

Analyze "Prelude in C".  This week you'll write your tune for Bach's chord progression.  Follow the guidelines that you used for "Giant Steps":

  • Use chord tones on strong beats, long notes, and/or where the chord changes

  • To make your line more interesting, use some non-harmonic tones on weak beats, short notes, and/or where the chord does not change.  Add rhythmic interest by having a mix of different durations.

New Material

This week we learn to identify seventh chords in inversions.

When you want to indicate that the bassist is to emphasize some note other than the root, use slash chord symbol notation.  Elton John used this a lot in "Your Song" to make a smooth bass line.

There are lots of ways to write endings.  You will pick one of the methods discussed or devise one of your own for your final project.

What You Should Know

At the end of this week you should be able to:

Create a new ending for a piece

Recognize seventh chords in inversions

Understand the use of slash chord symbol notation

Homework

Create a new melody for "Prelude in C".  Add it to a rhythm track accompaniment in Sibelius.
